President’s Message

Drinking from a fire hydrant is a comical reference, however after reviewing the Florida CCIM Chapter’s (the “Chapter”) first quarter of 2017, the phrase keeps popping into my head. Chapter planning for the remainder of 2017 includes a dizzying amount of meaningful, state-wide events and your leadership continues to break new ground in the areas of education, technology and networking; Our three pillars.

In just the first quarter of this year, the Chapter through it’s eight dynamic districts have hosted two outlook conferences, three CI courses, two Ward courses, the winter business meetings, 10 informative luncheons and 18 networking happy hours.

Chapter leadership travelled to Tallahassee along with the Florida Realtors® to promote the reduction of the rental sales tax. Many Chapter and District leaders then travelled to Chicago for the spring business meetings, where we pinned twelve new Florida CCIMs!

Many heartfelt thanks go to our volunteer leadership at both the Chapter and District levels. It is an honor to work alongside each one of you and equally inspiring and humbling to engage your passion and dedication to the members of the Chapter as well as to the pin.

Because of that passion and dedication, new ideas for our Chapter are flying around like crazy. Details to follow, but some exciting improvements in technology are coming down the line for Florida CCIMs.

The Chapter’s summer business meetings are to be held in Orlando on August 16-20th, and I ask you to make every effort to attend. Our meetings are held in conjunction with the Florida Realtors® annual convention and our networking and hospitality suite during the event is becoming legendary in the industry due to the quality of networking that occurs. http://convention.floridarealtors.org/

Still, with an amazing 1st quarter under our belt, I need to be clear:

A PRIMARY FOCUS OF CHAPTER LEADERSHIP (AND HOPEFULLY OUR MEMBERS) FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS IS THE REDUCTION OF THE RENTAL SALES TAX.

The 2017 legislative session in Tallahassee may be the last opportunity to see a meaningful reduction in the State mandated 6% tax levied on rent paid by Florida businesses. Florida is the only State that imposes rental tax, which is finally being recognized as an unfair burden carried too long by businesses large and small. The last day of Regular Session in Tallahassee May 5th, meaning we have two weeks from now to effect positive change. Signals from Tallahassee are that a reduction is entirely possible, but it will come down to the negotiations that always occur during the final days of a session.

Our Chapter is teaming with Florida Realtors® so that between now and May 5th, you may receive calls to patch you through directly to your representative’s home office. Please take the call and make a stand as an industry expert and stakeholder in Florida businesses. You will also receive emails with information concerning the relevant legislation to reduce the tax, along with instruction on how to effectively voice your opinion to those calling the shots in the Capitol. By now, you should be well versed in the issue, and should be talking to your State legislators and their staffs whenever the opportunity arises. We are seeking a huge push in advocacy during the final days of this session, so please be prepared to act.

Let’s keep up the good work so that we can show our clients and all businesses that the Florida CCIM Chapter was at the forefront and effective on their behalf. Thank you for being a supporter of the Florida CCIM Chapter and please do not hesitate to call me directly at (407) 963-7558 with any questions, thoughts or ideas on any of the above.
